There’s a lot of false information out there when it comes to solar. Door-to-door solar salesmen are becoming more common, but not everyone is affiliated with a trustworthy, accredited solar company. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) offers some tips about what to look for when choosing solar:

  1. Research the company – Choose a local company that is properly registered to install and sell solar in your area. You can contact the BBB for a rundown of any company you encounter.
  2. Remember, the government is not giving away free solar panels – Many salesmen will claim that the government will cover the cost of your solar panels so that you can actually make money if you switch to solar. This is not true. While there are tax credits available from the government, they will not completely cover the cost of your solar panels.
  3. Always ask for a copy of the contract – Solar contracts are long and detailed. If someone is trying to get you to quickly sign a tablet without having you read anything, then they should not be trusted. Make sure to read the contract and ask the BBB for help interpreting it if necessary.

If you are interested in solar, the BBB is here to help. If you have questions, contact the BBB so that you can make the best decision when the time comes.
